Newton, also named the 2015 NFL MVP, has been doubted, criticized, and even villainized by both fans and analysts throughout his career. He's been described as selfish, overrated, and even disliked by opposing players. At every turn, those who never even considered Newton would find long-term success in the NFL have celebrated any moment that supports their predetermined beliefs about the polarizing young QB. Every year, it also becomes harder and harder for them to do so.
Newton's latest personal accolade, however, shows that players respect Cam Newton even if they don't like him. After watching the announcement video, there doesn't seem to be much that the players don't like about him. Super Bowl MVP, Von Miller described Newton as "his favorite quarterback." Miller admired, "I like everything about him, from the dancing to the throws, to the big personality."
Carolina's 15-1 regular season that led to the franchise's second Super Bowl appears, coupled with Newton's individual success, continues to vindicate Newton as the NFL's premiere player. Until Newton secures a Super Bowl ring, however, expect the underlying narrative that Cam doesn't have what it take to win on the biggest stage to continue.
