All through the off season we pretty much knew the Panthers were going to be chasing left tackle Matt Kalil in free agency. His brother, Ryan Kalil, is a Pro Bowl center for them and it's a big need on the offensive line.
That was all confirmed this morning that they were close to a deal and we now know what those numbers are.
It will be interesting to see what the further breakdown of the contract will be, but it's a number the Panthers had to know they would be around. They knew going in that they wouldn't get Kalil on a one or two year "prove it" deal, but it's a risk they felt they had to take with Michael Oher still in the protocol and Mike Remmers set to hit free agency. This is also a weaker offensive line draft class, so there wouldn't be much help there either.
The Carolina Panthers are literally banking on Matt Kalil, but it's what they've been dealt with an uncertain future at this point. All you can do is hope it works out and he proves he's worth it.
