Why OJ Howard is not the Best Pick for Carolina at Eight Overall

Why OJ Howard is not the Best Pick for Carolina at Eight Overall

Rampant speculation is the name of the game at this time of the NFL calendar every year...that "dead time" when most of the free agents have been signed and the NFL Draft. Since teams have solidified their rosters as much as they're likely to before the draft in a month, there's not much else to look at.

Cam Newton to Have Shoulder Surgery, and He's Not the Only One in Pain

Cam Newton to Have Shoulder Surgery, and He's Not the Only One in Pain

Cam Newton took a beating last season. At one point, he got literally knocked out, causing him to miss time due to a concussion. In Week 14 against the Chargers, Cam Newton suffered a shoulder injury after being slammed to the ground. He looked in pain then, and it turns out he is still in pain.

Experts Everywhere Are Torn On The Carolina Panthers First Round Pick.

Just before the combine it seemed every analyst knew where the Panthers were going at pick eight, that was with LSU RB Leonard Fournette. Since the combine and free agency has taken place, there has been a lot of shifting gears (as there is nearly every year) as to where they think Carolina will go with high first round pick. Here are the latest pics we've seen.

CBS SPORTS- DE JONATHAN ALLEN- ALABAMA

SB NATION- RB LEONARD FOURNETTE- LSU

WALTER FOOTBALL- DE DEREK BARNETT- TENNESSEE

BLEACHER REPORT- CB MARSHON LATTIMORE- OHIO STATE

ROTOWORLD, JOSH NORRIS- WR COREY DAVIS- WESTERN MICHIGAN

Some other picks include Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com with RB Leonard Fournette, Pro Football Focus' Steve Palazzolo with WR Mike Williams, and Sporting News with TE OJ Howard out of Alabama.

As you can see the general consensus has changed right much since the combine and mainly free agency. Two of my favorite picks right now on this list are O.J. Howard and Corey Davis. Both could be an immediate impact on offense and are certainly possible at number eight. Howard could be a great complement and future replacement for Greg Olsen, while Davis could be an explosive, play making wide receiver the Panthers missed in '16 and elevate the passing game to a new level along with Kelvin Benjamin.

I was able to sit down with ECU star receiver Zay Jones before his autograph signing at Sup Dogs in Greenville, NC benefiting the Aces For Autism Foundation. I asked him a few quick questions about his recent experiences and confirmed the private workout he had earlier this week at ECU with Carolina Panthers coaches.

Situational Role? Julius Peppers Is Here To 'Be Productive.'

There was a lot of nostalgia in the air for the Carolina's when the Panthers brought back local favorite defensive end and Panthers great Julius Peppers last Friday. At 37, it's believed that Peppers would like be in a situational pass rushing role with other guys, but on a call with local WFNZ (click this link to here the interview), Peppers pushed the envelope further.

"We haven't really talked about that," Peppers said about his role.  "I can say this: It's not one of those situations where I'm coming back for a farewell tour. I'm coming back to play, and I'm coming back to try to make some things happen. So my expectation is to be out there and be productive."

It's obvious Peppers doesn't want to be a guy plugged in here or there just to be there and despite what the Panthers may have thought they would get out of him, it's something they certainly should like to hear.

Peppers is coming off a two-year stint with Green Bay where he recorded 18 sacks and 4 forced fumbles over that span. He had 7.5 sacks last season with the Packers, so the consistency is still there. While he lined up a lot in a 3-4 role, he was still very effective with his hand in the dirt, which is where he Carolina will use him most.

He's also not ruling out playing another year at age 38.

"Well, right now, I'm taking it one year at a time. At the end of the year if I still feel good, than why not?"

One year at a time, but I'm sure if Julius is productive in '17, then the Carolina's would love to have him back to end his career where it began... in Charlotte, NC.

Panthers Down to 14 million in Salary Cap Space, and It's Really Less Than That!

The Panthers spending money is getting short. Re-signing Mario Addison, Charles Johnson, and adding guys like Matt Kalil, Julius Peppers, and Captain Munnerlyn has consumed much of Carolina's cap space. Now down to $14.3m dollars in cap space. This isn't all spendable cash, however. $9m of this needs to be allocated for signing rookies, practice squad members, and potential additions throughout the season.

There's still an opportunity to free up some space. We'll likely see some space cleared up as Carolina refines its roster more and more. Right now, Carolina only has about $5m in liquid cash to spend. Good thing Gettleman knows how to shop at the Dollar Store. This is when he's at his best actually.

Philly Brown Signed by Buffalo Bills

Philly Brown Signed by Buffalo Bills

Carolina's parting with Philly Brown reminded of the colder side of the NFL. Brown didn't take the news easily, immediately scrubbing his Twitter bio of any Panther forensics. Some have talked of an Instagram live video where Brown vented on the situation, and reportedly Brown was upset by coverage of his video by Bill Voth.
